PASCO — Four games into this high school football season, the Sageview Lobos are starting to look like a playoff team.

Don Hogue’s Lobos defeated host Pasco 41-7 in Mid-Columbia Conference play on Friday night at Edgar Brown Stadium.

Hogue said despite the victory, there are plenty things to work on.

“We were sloppy tonight overall,” said Hogue. “In my head and some other of our coaches’ heads, there is a standard we are trying to play to. We’re preparing to be the best team we can be at the end of the season.”

But for a Week 4 game in September, the Lobos looked pretty good.

Especially the Big 3 on offense — Alex Flores, Eli Henderson and Jaysen Beasley.

Flores, the team’s quarterback, was 21 for 39 passing for 311 yards and five touchdowns.

Henderson rushed nine times for 131 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 3 passes for 22 yards, scoring two more times.

And Beasley snared 7 passes for 118 yards and three more touchdowns. That gives the senior 12 TDs on the season.

“This all starts up front. Credit to our line,” said Beasley, the MCC’s top receiver. “It gives Alex time to find our reads. Just credit to Alex finding us. We have a great group of receivers, and we’ve all bought in.”

Brett Jay has come in this season install his high-powered offense that goes hand in hand with Hogue’s swarming defensive unit.

Area football fans know the Jay name well. He is a River View High School graduate who has coached at his alma mater and Hanford before moving up to run the Moses Lake program the last few years. His son Brady was his quarterback who set a lot of passing records — both Mavericks and state — before earning a scholarship at the University of Montana this fall.

Brett Jay resigned at Moses Lake after last season and joined Hogue’s staff this summer. Hogue said he and Jay had always talked about finding a way to work together.

And here it is.

“It’s a different offense and we bought in,” said Flores. “We have a whole new identity, and this offense is very fun.”

Right now, so is the Lobos defense.

“Our D is solid,” said Hogue. “We made some changes and got some guys back from injuries. We’re trying to keep our offensive line and defensive line separate so they stay rested and will be ready for October and November.”

Sageview’s defense spent the night harassing Bulldogs sophomore quarterback Zevan Stanley — who still ended up with a respectable 150 passing yards, completing 19 of 28 attempts.

But Pasco just couldn’t find the end zone.

Sageview held a 19-0 halftime lead, expanded it to 25-0 after the third quarter, then scored 16 points on two touchdowns in the fourth quarter with 7:47 to play that started the running clock.

JoJo Cole found the end zone for the Bulldogs on a 5-yard run with 1:40 to play.

Flores admits last season — a season in which the Lobos, with no senior class, went 0-9 and took some major poundings from the rest of the MCC — was really tough.

So what’s happening now has been rewarding.

“We just all really bought in right now,” said Flores. “We take it one day at a time. Every single day, we work hard at practice and we make each other better. Just push each other. I think our attitude is amazing right now.”

The rest of the MCC is taking notice.

RICHLAND, HANFORD HOME GAMES RESCHEDULED: A fire on I-82 near West Richland on Friday afternoon caused enough smoke in Richland that district officials postponed the scheduled MCC contests.
