RICHLAND – If the first week of league play in the Mid-Columbia Conference didn’t make you realize that it’s going to be a crazy season, then Week 2 has had to have convinced you.
Consider that the lone unbeaten this season is Sageview. The Lobos were winless a year ago in their inaugural season. And then there were last week’s results in which the Class 3A schools went 5-0 against the 4A teams.
Richland, which began the weekend winless, added to the surprises Saturday evening by beating previously unbeaten Kennewick, 21-0, in a game that was postponed from Friday because of smoky air from a nearby wildfire.
The game was scoreless after three quarters before scoring runs from Justin Volmer and Micah Meyer sandwich Jackson Woodard’s nearly 40-yard scoring pass to Pierson Bryant for the Bombers.
It was Richland’s first win against Kennewick since a 35-14 victory in 2018, and the first time the Bombers shutout the Lions in a decade.
Kennewick was coming off a 22-17 victory against crosstown rival Kamiakin, which followed nonleague routs of Pasco and Gonzaga Prep.
Richland, meanwhile, dropped nonleague games against Graham-Kapowsin and Moses Lake, who advance to the Class 4A semifinals and quarterfinals, respectively. The Bombers were then edged by Sageview last week to open conference play.
Volmer and fellow junior Finn Bunnage were recognized for their strong performances by Richland coach Josh Jelinek. Freshman Cooper Ward got the start at left tackle for the Bombers.
“This was a quality team win,” Jelinek said.
Richland (1-3 overall, 1-1 MCC) hosts Pasco on Friday, while Kennewick (3-1 overall, 1-1 MCC) visits Sageview.
