Conference allocations for football's Week 10 play-ins look familiar

CBBN, MCC, CWAC and SCAC will have the same number of bids this November

The WIAA announced state allocations on Monday, but what football teams are concerned about in the four Stat Hound conferences is how many bids are to be had in the round of 32 in Class 4A, 3A and 2A, and 24 in 1A that is played in Week 10.

Tuesday afternoon the allocations came out, and they look an awful lot like last year.

In 4A, District 5 – which includes the CBBN – will again have four teams seeded into the round of 32. Last season that was Moses Lake, Eastmont, Sunnyside and Wenatchee, and those four look like they could again nab the berths.

District 6 – the Mid-Columbia Conference and Greater Spokane League – gets five spots in both 4A and 3A. There are nine 4A teams between the MCC and GSL, with five of those in the Tri-Cities league, and of the 11 combined 3A teams, six are in the GSL.

Last season, each conference received two berths in each classification and the third-place teams met in a play-in for the final spot. Chiawana and Richland earned the MCC’s round-of-32 spots, while Kamiakin advanced from the play-in.

In 3A, Kennewick and Southridge nabbed spots in the 32-team bracket, with Walla Walla falling to University for the fifth berth between the conferences.

Four CWAC teams will advance to the round of 32. Last fall, East Valley, Othello, Prosser and Selah earned the spots, and those four teams – perhaps in a different order – could again nab the spots, although Toppenish and Ephrata lead the teams that also will have a say.

District 5 in 1A includes the nine-team SCAC and the three-team Caribou Trail League. Four berths go to the SCAC topped by six-time defending state champion Royal and runner-up Cashmere. The CTL gets one bid, while the fifth-place team in the SCAC meets the Caribou runner-up for the final spot.

This is the third year that Week 10 will be used as a state playoff play-in for all of Washington.

Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1B have 16-team state brackets, while this fall 2B will join the 1A in a 12-team field.
