YAKIMA – Eastmont remained eastern Washington’s lone unbeaten in the Class 4A and 3A ranks Friday night.
The Wildcats, though, had to rally to keep their perfect mark.
Overcoming their own mistakes and a West Valley squad looking for its third straight victory, Eastmont came back for a 39-33 victory in CBBN action at Clasen Field.
Austin Zelinksi rushed for three touchdowns, and took a screen pass on the game’s first play from scrimmage 66 yards for a score to lead the Wildcats, who are looking for their first conference championship since 2023.
They’ll head to two-time defending CBBN champion Moses Lake on Oct. 23. The Mavericks rolled past Davis on Friday night, 56-0.
Eastmont looked like it might cruise for the fourth straight week and fifth time this season. In those victories, the Wildcats have averaged 54 points and won by nearly 37 points per contest.
Their other win was against Mid-Columbia Conference leader Southridge.
But the Rams, who outlasted Davis in triple overtime and scored with 2 seconds left in the game last week to beat Sunnyside.
And Friday night, West Valley took advantage of three Eastmont turnovers, and a special teams score. Chase Massey returned one of the team’s two interceptions 55 yards for a score early in the second quarter.
After Micah Jones took the opening kickoff 80-plus yards to give the Rams their first lead of the game – 19-18 – a fumble recovery a few plays later gave the Rams a short field,
Drayden Birley took advantage, hitting Donni Malland for a 14-yard score.
The Wildcats would then lean on Zelinski and their defense.
After Malland’s touchdown pushed the West Valley lead to 26-18, Eastmont went on a 58-yard drive capped by Zelinski’s 2-yard plunge. A three-and-out later, the Wildcats would go 55 yards with Zelinski sprinting his way to a 14-yard score, and a 32-26 lead.
The Wildcats next drive was a masterpiece, covering 75 yards and nearly 11 minutes of the fourth quarter. Zelinski would convert two fourth downs on the ground, and score his final TD with less than a minute left in the game.
Birley would toss an 18-yard touchdown to Hargraves with 16.9 seconds left. The Rams, however, were unable to recover the onside kick, and Eastmont took a knee to seal the victory.
The Wildcats (6-0 overall, 3-0 CBBN), who got a short touchdown run from lineman Nash Moser, host Wenatchee next Friday, before heading to Moses Lake the following week.
West Valley (2-4 overall, 2-2 CBBN) visits Eisenhower next Friday looking to wrap up its third straight Yakima championship.

Garcia and Christian Ward also ran for TDs for Wenatchee, which heads to Eastmont next Friday for the Battle of the Bridges.
