Week 7 of the Mid-Columbia Conference football season kicks off tonight with three games, all involving teams vying for postseason berths.
The biggest matchup happens at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco, where Sageview plays host to Southridge. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The contest pits two Class 3A teams that could win the MCC title.
Sageview and Southridge are ranked 1-2, respectively, in total offense in the MCC.
The host Lobos are No. 1, averaging 442 yards per game, with 312 of those coming through their passing attack.
Sageview head coach Don Hogue has relied on Brett Jay to run his passing attack. Jay most recently had been head coach at Moses Lake and is now the Lobos’ offensive coordinator.
Sageview quarterback Alex Flores leads the MCC in passing with 1,952 yards, with 25 touchdown passes with just 9 interceptions.
His top target is Jaysen Beasley, who is the MCC’s top receiver with 41 receptions for 769 yards.
Another top weapon is running back Eli Henderson, who is a dual threat. Henderson ranks fourth in MCC rushing with 568 yards on 76 carries. But he has also caught 34 passes for 338 yards.
Altogether, Henderson leads the entire conference in all-purpose yards with 1,117.
Beasley and Henderson also know how to find the end zone. They each have scored 14 touchdowns this season, tied for No. 1 in the MCC.
But here’s Sageview’s problem: the Lobos have gotten into shootouts the last two weeks — losing 42-37 against Kennewick, then falling 49-27 at Walla Walla after turning the ball over five times.
The Lobos defense must come up with a way to stop Southridge’s impressive Wing-T offense, which has rolled up over 500 yards of rushing (versus Hermiston) and over 400 yards rushing (against Pasco) the past two weeks.
Matt Johnson’s offense has no less than six running backs who can dominate a game.
The leaders are Tayton Jackman (No. 2 in MCC rushing with 753 yards) and Jacob Korotkov (No. 5 with 561). But Ramses Chavez has stepped up the past few weeks too.
Defensively, Southridge is the No. 2 team in the MCC, giving up 271 yards a game.
Korotkov, a linebacker, ranks No. 2 in the MCC with 52.5 tackles. He also in the conference leader in tackles for loss with 11.
Jackman, a defensive back, is third with 45 tackles.
Tonight, something has to give between these two teams.
· The other two matchups tonight have Richland visiting Hermiston, while Walla Walla travels to Kennewick.
Two other games are set for Friday, with Chiawana visiting Pasco at Edgar Brown Stadium; and Hanford taking on Kamiakin at Lampson Stadium.
All start times this weekend are at 7 p.m.
Early warning for Week 8: Kennewick at Chiawana, Friday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m., Edgar Brown Stadium.
