KENNEWICK – The Southridge Suns scored 24 consecutive points en route to beating visiting Walla Walla 31-13 on Friday night, giving head coach Matt Johnson and his crew a share of the Mid-Columbia Conference football title.
“We knew going into tonight that Walla Walla was on a roll,” said Johnson. “Their running back (Kalama Roberson) is a stud. But we finally had a full strength team tonight.”
Tayton Jackman rushed 14 times for 104 yards for the Suns, scoring twice — once on a run and another on a reception.
Jacob Korotkov and Toa Haertling each added rushing touchdowns for Southridge, now 6-0 in MCC play and 7-1 overall.
Lincoln Heinrich tossed TD passes to Trey McCauley and Derrick Bingham Jr.
As far as playoffs are concerned, the Suns have advanced to the 3A Round of 32.
But Johnson’s crew are not assured of the MCC’s top playoff berth just yet.
Southridge meets Kennewick next week, and if the Lions win and Hermiston can beat Walla Walla, Kennewick could be the No. 1 seed.
Conference athletic directors had originally determined that the MCC schedule, now down to seven games for each team (instead of the full nine), would determine playoff berths.
Sometime during the season, ADs decided playoff berths would be determine by teams’ classification games.
As one MCC coach told Stat Hound, “(The ADs) are scrambling because it’s going to be a mess in both 4A and 3A.”
Chiawana, Kamiakin and Richland will advance to the postseason. But the order is not set until next weekend.
KAMIAKIN 34, RICHLAND 33: At Richland, the Braves (5-3 overall, 3-3 MCC) rallied from being down 27-14 entering the fourth quarter to take the lead and hang on for a win. Justin Volmer caught a TD pass for the Bombers (4-4 overall, 4-2 MCC) from Jackson Woodard in the waning seconds of the game. Richland elected to go for the 2-point conversion and it failed.
HERMISTON 49, SAGEVIEW 47: At Hermiston, Brayden Medelez led the Bulldogs (4-4 overall, 3-3 MCC) to a shootout win. Medelez rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns, and he passed for 158 and three TDs. Alex Flores had 369 passing yards and 6 TD passes for the Lobos (4-4 overall, 2-4 MCC).
CHIAWANA 26, KENNEWICK 7: At Pasco, the Riverhawks (7-1 overall, 5-1 MCC) won for the fifth straight time and held their third consecutive opponent to seven points or less. Kennewick (5-3 overall, 3-3 MCC) meets Southridge next week to cap the conference schedule.
HANFORD 9, PASCO 0: At Pasco, the Falcons (2-6 overall, 1-5 MCC) pitched up their first conference victory of the season with Thursday’s shut out of the Bulldogs (1-7 overall, 0-6 MCC).
