Big Sky Conference set to be Red Devil country
Three East Valley players headed to difference programs in FCS league

All through their unbeaten run to the Class 2A state semifinals, the East Valley football players talked about 'brotherhood.'
Well, those family bonds are about to be tested.
Three of the team’s biggest stars – receiver Greyson Stevens, do-it-all Cody Gasseling and defensive lineman Zeliah Wade – are headed to the Big Sky Conference, but to different schools.
Wednesday was the day for players who didn’t sign their National Letter of Intent in December to ink their names.
The conference hit Central Washington hard, as record-setting Moses Lake quarterback Brady Jay and Prosser lineman Josiah West also are headed to the powerful FCS conference.
Stevens, the program’s all-time leading receiver, is headed to national champion Montana State in Bozeman. He finished this season with 75 receptions for 1,297 yards and 21 receptions, and also returned two interceptions for scores.
Stevens signed his National Letter of Intent during the early signing period on the first Wednesday of December.
Gasseling, whose versatility on offense bolstered EV’s ground and air attacks, signed his LOI on Wednesday to play for Eastern Washington. Gasseling was an all-state linebacker and all-CWAC on both sides of the ball.
He rushed for 795 yards and 11 touchdowns on 100 carries, and caught 31 passes for 540 yards and another eight touchdowns.
Wade was the CWAC’s Defensive MVP, finishing with nine sacks, 37 quarterback hurries and 17 tackles for loss. He also had been offered scholarships by EWU and Central Washington, before signing with the Vikings on Wednesday.
Chris Fisk left CWU in December to take over at Portland State.
Ellensburg defensive lineman Silas Stewman, at 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, also signed to play at EWU. HE earned honorable mention all-CWAC honos this past fall.
“They’ve earned where they’re at,” East Valley coach Eric Berg said. “It’s going to be exciting. I told them I’ll be doing a lot of travelling on Saturdays if they’re playing.”
Berg also said that he’s launching a new tradition – if a Red Devil alum plays collegiately, he has to bring coach a T-shirt from the program.
East Valley also will be well-represented in the Earl Barden All-Star Classic scheduled for June 20 on the Red Devils’ field.
Berg will coach the East, and have quarterback and son Jaxon Berg, running back Braden Albrecht and defensive back Jayden Buckalew on his roster.
“It’s very cool to coach those guys one more time, and on our home field,” the CWAC Coach of the Year said.
Joining the Red Devils in the Big Sky will be Jay and West, who signed with Montana in December.
Jay threw for 4.207 yards and a state-record 72 touchdowns to lead the Mavericks to a school-record 11 victories and their first state quarterfinal appearance since 2015. He twice won the CBBN MVP and received numerous all-state accolades.4
West was an all-league offensive lineman for the Mustangs.
Former Davis standout Lance McGee made his commitment to Washington State official Wednesday. The state player of the year led Sumner to a Class 4A state championship repeat with record-setting rushing performance in the Spartans’ semifinal and championship victories.
McGee had committed to Oregon State but wavered after the school fired coach Trent Bray. Bray was hired by new WSU coach and Prosser alum Kirby Moore, leading to McGee being headed to the Palouse.
Cashmere defensive lineman Prin Fox signed with UNLV in December.
