For scheduling purposes. West Valley’s Senior Night was 12 nights ago.
For the emotional man-this-is-really-it purposes, Thursday night’s CBBN District championship game against Moses Lake was the night for team's 12th-graders.
And the Rams’ three seniors – Parker Mills, Parker Hill and Kailer Valdovinos – left the home court they’ve known for four years as champions.
West Valley battled past the Mavericks, 82-71, to win their third straight district crown and advance to the Class 4A round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season.
The Rams are almost assuredly headed back to the Tacoma Dome as a top-eight seed.
“I mentioned that to them pregame – this is your absolute last game on your home floor, make sure you go out your way,” West Valley coach Tyson Whitfield said. “We needed every ounce of what they hate to provide for us and I’m just happy they got to go out the way they wanted.
Mills, who committed to play football at Washington State last week, was his usual force down low, scoring 34 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.
He converted three and-ones, and probably deserved a few more with the pounding he took.
“As (Coach Whitfield) says, ‘if they’re going to play physical you’ve got to play more physical,’” Mills said. “If they don’t make the call, you just have to play through it.”
He scored 14 points in the first quarter when the Rams were struggling to find their shooting touch from the outside, and 18 in the third quarter.
“That’s the growth of him over the four years,” Whitfield said. “His freshman or sophomore year he would shut down not getting those calls. Now? He’s like, ‘whatever, I gotta make plays for my team.”
As were Hill and Valdovinos.
Hill knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Two of his treys came in the fourth
quarter. The first was on a feed from Valdovinos – who plucked a handful of offensive rebounds – that let the home crowd exhale.
And the second to leave no doubt.
“I’m glad I was able to do that, especially with the last game here, it’s kind of emotional to think about,” Hill.
Moses Lake’s Brady Jay and company kept it close all but for final couple minutes. The record-setting Montana-bound quarterback matched Mills’ output with 34 points.
He slashed to the hoop effectively, was active on the offensive glass and hit two 3s in the first quarter.
Grady Walker added 12 points for the second-seeded Mavericks (14-8), who will now host Sunnyside on Saturday for the conference’s second berth in the round of 16.
Moses Lake was a game away from state last year, but fell to top-seeded Davis for the second bid.
The Rams, who got a dozen points from Austin Birley and Jrayden Whitfield, will wait for Sunday’s bracket reveal to see when, where and against who they’ll play.
Last year, they were seeded sixth, and won at third-seeded Glacier Peak in the round of 16 before finishing fifth in the Tacoma Dome.
“We just want to be top eight, so we know that we’re in the Dome again like last year,” Whit field said. “These guys have shown that they can go on the road and beat anybody when we play up to our capabilities.”
Sunnyside stays alive, ousts Davis
SUNNYSIDE – Aiden Sanchez scored 23 points, Julian Villanueva added 21, and the Grizzlies used a big second quarter to beat Davis 64-56 to advance to a winner-to-state-contest.
Sunnyside (14-8) will visit Moses Lake at 6 p.m. Saturday for a berth in the Class 4A state tournament.
David Vazquez and D'Anthony Wiggins each scored 14 points for the Pirates, who finished the season 8-14.
