The wrestling rooms in Yakima County’s Lower Valley are as productive as the fertile grounds that surround their communities, filling trophy cases over many years.
Yet, even with all the accomplishments – Toppenish’s run of team titles for both the boys and girls, and Wapato earning its first championship last winter – what could happen this weekend at Mat Classic XXXVII in the Tacoma Dome would be beyond what the area has seen.
First, the Wildcats could have four wrestlers complete four-peats. Even with the dozens of state champions the program has produced, only one – Kiyanno Zuniga a year ago – has won four state titles, although the lost tournament of 2021 because of covid did cost a couple of wrestlers their shot.
Second, Wapato could be ready to repeat – even if it doesn’t get an individual champion.
On the boys side for Toppenish, Steven Romero (126 pounds) and Justyce Zuniga (138) are favorites to win a fourth championship. The two, along with three other individual champions, helped the Wildcats fend off Ellensburg and Othello for the district championship.
For the girls. Sophia Torrez (105) and Adalyne Montiel (110) also have title No. 4 in their sights. Teammate Sara Ortega (135) is looking for a repeat of her own.
“You could call it a coach’s dream,” Toppenish coach Pepe Segovia said. “I’ve had these kids since they were tiny.”
On the team side, the girls are going for a fifth straight championship, the first an all-classification title, then 1A/2B/1B in 2023 and 2024, and 2A last year. They got past Othello, the state runner-up in 2025, at the district tournament.
For both programs, what they see everyday in practice helps them come duals and tournaments.
“The Toppenish room is tough,” Segovia said. “They give each other the best match, every match is a tournament match.
“We make practice count every day.”
As do the Wolves, who have 21 wrestlers headed to Tacoma. That depth could lead them to a team title repeat, even if none of the wrestlers stand atop the podium.
“We have such a deep room,” Wapato coach Chris Garza said. “Every match is against a kid who is state caliber. That’s where we definitely beat out some good teams.”
That competition – and the daily reminders – help the wrestlers know that last year’s success won’t necessarily carry over.
“We just let them know that last year is last year and this is a new year and tournament,” Garza said.
The Wolves won the state title with one champion – senior Angel Leyva – but three second-place finishers.
Among those runners-up were Raul Sanchez III, who’s a favorite at the same weight, 157.
Christopher Garza Jr. was third at 144 in 2025, and is up 150 this year.
Xzavier Garza (120) and Josiah Gutierrez (215) also won district championships for the Wolves and have high hopes this weekend.
Wapato won the conference and district title against SCAC competition that placed three other teams in the top 10 besides the top-ranked Wolves.
No. 3 Zillah, second behind Zillah at state last winter, sends 12 Tacoma with district champs Leonel Lustre (113), Ryan Vader (144), Emmanuel Fernandez (175) and Jake Tuner (285) leading the way.
Fourth-ranked Cashmere qualified 13 and Mack Pell (126), Marshall Pell (132), Jance Novak (165) and Grey Jacobson (190) won district titles.
On the girls side, Royal could be looking for its first state title.
The Knights topped a rugged 1A/2B/1B district tournament last weekend that included state champion Granger.
Royal, which was edged by the Spartans by 2.5 points last February, has 16 in Tacoma, half of those in the first four weight classes. Sophia Garza (110), Reese Prescott (115) and Heaven Parker (125) won district titles.
Elsewhere in the CWAC, Othello’s girls advanced 15 wrestlers, including district champs Angie Monday (130), Addie Russel (140) and Karla Guzman (145).
Ephrata’s Adylene Sanchez (155) is looking for her second state title.
Ellensburg’s boys were second at the district tourney, earning 11 state berths with Cash Eyler winning at 132.
Othello was third with 13 wrestlers advancing and Camilo Mendez III (150) winning a title. Mason Russell (138) will be wrestling for his fourth medal.
