ELLENSBURG – Two weeks ago, after a 27-point humbling at Prosser, the seventh-ranked Ellensburg’s girls basketball team looked in trouble to those outside of the program.
But what’s inside these Bulldogs, who have made four straight trips to the Class 2A state championship game with the first two resulting in titles, is immeasurable.
On Friday evening, Ellensburg again displayed its mettle, rallying from a 20-point deficit early in the third quarter to beat sixth-ranked Selah, 53-49, to claim the No. 2 seed to the CWAC district tournament which begins Tuesday.
Already trailing by 14 points at halftime, the Bulldogs watched the Vikings score the first six points in the first 90 seconds of the second half to take a 34-14 lead.
Ellensburg responded by outscoring Selah 19-3 the rest of the quarter, and trailed by just four going into the final quarter.
Molly Moffat, who finished with 14 points, canned a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth and Brea Potucek had six of her career-high 14 points as the Bulldogs surged to the victory.
Bella Standish added 12 points for Ellensburg (13-3 CWAC, 17-4 overall), which again will host the Vikings (12-4, 16-5) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a district opener.
Selah won the tiebreaker with Grandview for the No. 3 seed.
The ninth-ranked Greyhounds on Friday became the latest victim of the buzzsaw that third-ranked Prosser has become.
Since suffering their lone conference loss to Selah a month ago, the Mustangs have raced to 10 straight victories by an average of more than 48 points. Prosser beat Grandview 99-52 on Friday.
Mustangs star junior Herbie Wright poured in 38 points to eclipse the 1,500-point mark for her career and move past Jordan Brown on the school’s all-time scoring list. Only Prosser assistant coach Tamara Jones (1.930) has scored more points than Wright (1,522) in program history.
The Mustangs will host the Greyhounds again at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Fifth-seeded Toppenish will host No. 8 Othello, while No. 6 East Valley entertains seventh-seeded Quincy in loser-out play-in contests Tuesday. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.
In the SCAC girls action, both fifth-ranked Wapato (13-3 SCAC, 16-4 overall) and No. 7 Royal (13-3, 18-3) both won Friday to tie for second behind top-ranked Zillah, which capped off a 16-0 run through the conference Tuesday.
With the better RPI going into Friday, it’s likely that the Knights will be the second seed when the tournament begins Thursday.
West Valley (7-3 CBBN, 9-8 overall) notched a key win in CBBN, winning at Sunnyside, 49-47, to open a one-game lead for second place behind No. 1 Davis.
The top two teams in the conference meet for the district championship, with the loser getting a second shot for the CBBN’s second berth to state.
The Rams host Wenatchee on Saturday before capping their conference schedule Tuesday at Eisenhower (6-4, 10-8) which sits a game behind West Valley.
