PROSSER – For the first time since pre-pandemic, the CWAC District girls championship doesn’t belong to Ellensburg.
But, boy, did second-ranked Prosser have to battle to wrest the crown from the No. 6 Bulldogs.
Two-time conference scoring champion Herbie Wright scored 21 points, Deidra Phillips added 18, and the top-seeded Mustangs battled past No. 2 Ellensburg, 67-56, on Wednesday night.
Both teams now wait until Sunday’s reveal of the Class 2A state bracket to see who, where and when they’ll play in the round of 16.
“They came to play,” Prosser coach Jessica Huntongton said. “They were prepared to battle and they made it tough.”
A couple bloody noses, and Wright having to leave after getting her bell rung, though, couldn’t stop the Mustangs from ending Bulldogs’ district run after five straight titles.
This was the fifth straight year Ellensburg and Prosser had met in the final.
“It means a lot and not just for the kids on this team,” Huntington said. “We’ve been building this for four or five years. It’s been a long time coming.”
Nearly four weeks after the Mustangs handled the Bulldogs 74-47, this one was a battle.
Prosser couldn’t shake Ellensburg, which played just five players before Molly Moffat fouled out in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs led 29-28 at the break, and nudged the lead to six going into the fourth quarter.
With a little breathing room, Prosser salted away the victory by hitting 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. Wright sank all 13 of her free throws, including eight in the final period.
“We’ve been doing that for most of the season, especially Herbie,” Huntington said. “She gets to the line, under pressure late in the game and she steps up.”
The Mustangs (21-3) have won 13 straight games, the first 12 being blowouts.
They’ll almost certainly be a top-four seed, giving them a ‘home’ regional game and a spot in the SunDome for the fifth year in a row. Prosser has advanced to the semifinals and won a top-five trophy the last four tournaments,
Bella Standish topped the Bulldogs (19-5) with 18 points, and Ellie Markus added 17.
Ellensburg had won seven straight before Wednesday, going from state hopeful to having a good chance at a top-eight seed and a sixth straight trip to the SunDome.
The Bulldogs have advanced to the championship four straight years, winning the title in 2022 and 2023.
Selah moves on to crossover
Lily St. Mary scored 15 points and Elise Kingston and Braylee Pendleton each had 13 and the third-seeded Selah (18-7) ousted No. 4 Grandview, 57-49.
The Vikings advance to Saturday’s crossover and will travel to Squalicum (20-4), the third-place finisher in the Northwest Conference district tournament.
Leyla Rodriguez and Angel Thomas each had 13 points, and Jenna Garza 11 for the Greyhounds (17-8).
